Tips to Successfully Complete Transactions

Here are some tips for sellers to complete transactions successfully and increase your reputation score.

  • Always Ship With a Tracking Number
You should always ship items with a tracking number. UPS, USPS, and FedEx provide tracking numbers for free when shipping packages.
  • Ship Items With Some Padding
The vast majority of items will ship safe and secure in a padded envelope. If you're shipping a fragile item, like a cardboard video game box, use a box with packing peanuts or bubble wrap.
  • Communicate With Buyer
Let the buyer know when you ship the item. If there is a delay, let them know too. Good communication eliminates most problems.
  • Fix Any Problems
If there is a problem with an order, work with the buyer to fix it. Most buyers will leave positive ratings if you fix a problem. Ignoring a problem it is the fastest way to get a bad reputation.

Steps Sellers Should Take to Reduce Fraud

Here are steps you should take to avoid potential fraud.

  • Check Buyer's Feedback & Account Duration
Buyers with a long account history and lots of feedback are much less risk than new users. If the buyer has already made successful payments, they are likely to continue in the future.
  • Be Extra Cautious With High Value Items
The higher the transaction value, the riskier it is. Use extra caution if you are selling something valuable ($50+).
  • Check If Billing and Shipping Address Match
Sometimes valid payments will ship to a different address - a gift, recent move, etc - but orders shipping to different addresses are higher risk.
  • Confirm Payment Passed "CVC Check"
"CVC Check" shows if the buyer entered the valid 3 digit code on the back of their credit card. Anything but "passed" is riskier.
  • Confirm Payment Passed "Street Check"
"Street Check" means the buyer's billing address matches the address on file with the credit card. Anything but "passed" is riskier.
  • Confirm Payment Passed "Zip Check"
"Zip Check" means the buyer's billing zip code matches the zip code on file with the credit card. Anything but "passed" is riskier.
  • Customize Your Payment Settings
PayPal lets you customize your settings to automatically accept or decline certain kinds of payments.
  • Be Cautious of Shipping Changes After Payment
Buyers who asks you to ship the item quicker or even pay for overnight shipping are a higher risk. Same with buyers who ask you to change the shipping address.
  • When in doubt, refund the payment
If you are not comfortable taking the risk for shipping an item. Refund the payment ASAP.

Steps We Take to Minimize Fraud

  • We Remove Bad Users
Users who file an unusual number of chargebacks will be kicked off the site.
  • We Don't Allow Transactions on High Fraud Items
Most fraud payments are for high value items that are easy to resell. Initially, we aren't allowing users to buy and sell these. We will lift this restriction when more users have feedback histories.
  • Automatically Reject Suspicious Payments
PayPal has tools built into their payment process to help reject fraudulent payments.
