| Description: | The origins of Turok: Rage Wars' gray cartridge variant stems from a programming error found in the original game. The original black cartridge suffered from a game-breaking glitch that prevented players from completing a specific stage. The glitch occurs in the game's two-player trials section, in a mode known as frag tag. This outraged many completionists, who turned their aggression to the game's developer, Acclaim, in the form of countless angry emails and letters. Acclaim knew replacing every broken cartridge would be expensive and didn't want news getting out that it shipped a faulty product. Instead, the company kept the issues under wraps and decided to only fix carts that were sent back to them by displeased gamers. Acclaim sent all the angry consumers an email with instructions on how to send back their broken game, assuring them an updated copy would be sent shortly. Many sent the malfunctioning black cartridge to Acclaim, which replaced them with working gray cartridges. Acclaim swapped Turok: Rage Wars' black shell case with a gray one, letting players known it was the updated version. As time went by, collectors and die-hard Turok fans got wind that the gray variants were the only completed version of Rage Wars. |
